In the quest for a greener future, the recycling and repurposing of end-of-life batteries stands as a crucial endeavor. With the rise of electric vehicles and renewable energy storage solutions, the demand for sustainable battery recycling methods has never been more pressing. BATRAW, a pioneering project funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe program, seeks to develop new procedures for the repair and reuse of batteries, minimize waste generation and, ultimately, enhance the recovery of critical raw materials in recycling processes to strengthen the EU’s strategic autonomy.
Innovative Initiatives and Partnerships
Led by the Technological Centre LEITAT in Spain, BATRAW brings together 17 partners from 7 countries to collaborate on groundbreaking research and development initiatives. With a funded budget of 12 million euros, the project kicked-off in 2022 and is poised to make significant strides in advancing battery recycling technologies and practices. After successfully undergoing a thorough review by the European Commission in February, the project has entered its second phase, marking a critical milestone in its journey towards achieving its objectives.
Pioneering Pilots
BATRAW includes two pilot programs designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of its innovative approaches to battery recycling. The first pilot, hosted at the facilities of BeePlanet in Pamplona, Spain, focuses on semi-automated processes for handling end-of-life batteries. The goal is to achieve a recovery rate of up to 95% of battery pack components while separating waste streams efficiently. Meanwhile, the second pilot, set to take place at the facilities of Orano in Bessines sur Gartempe, France, will implement mechanical and hydrometallurgical technologies to improve the separation of materials in the so-called black mass. With a selectivity target of 90-98%, this pilot aims to recover the full range of battery raw materials.
Cluster HUB Collaboration
Fortunately, BATRAW is not alone in this endeavor and has joined forces with 15 other projects under the Cluster HUB – a collaborative community focused on the production of raw materials within European borders. By sharing knowledge and resources, the projects aim to drive a more sustainable and circular production of raw materials for the European battery industry.
