PIAP Space is extending the life cycle of the satellites

The leading European company in space robotics, PIAP Space, announced that it had successfully finished the ORBITA project co-funded by regional funds. This ambitious initiative focuses on enhancing the utility and efficiency of satellite servicing by introducing end-effectors MULTIS and LARIS, which are designed for use on robotic manipulators in orbit. The solution will provide the possibility of regular maintenance and repair missions in harsh space environment. It will allow the space industry to save financial and technological resources and extend the life cycle of the satellites.

In the ORBITA scope, four main products have been developed: MULTIS (Robotic Multipurpose Gripper), LARIS (Launch Adapter Ring Gripper), FORTIS (Force and Torque Sensor), and the Close Range Vision System algorithm: MULTIS (Robotic Multipurpose Gripper) integrates two main subsystems: a Rotary Module capable of 360° rotation and a Gripper Module with interchangeable tool capacity. After intercepting the client satellite, MULTIS intends to perform multiple tasks that may require precision, and using several interchangeable tools is perfectly suited for this job. LARIS (Launch Adapter Ring Gripper) LARIS can operate as an end-effector mounted on a robotic arm or as a separate clamping mechanism. With low weight, large grasping envelope, multiple sensors, and the ability to withstand high loads, it is a perfect tool for its purpose. FORTIS (Force and Torque Sensor) is a light, compact, redundant sensor measuring forces and torques with high precision. With communication and power passing through, it can be placed between the gripper and robotic arm, giving valuable data. At the same time, the Close Range Vision System algorithm allows fully autonomous movement of the robotic arm with gripper through the last phase of capturing the client satellite by the LAR.
Key among the equipment is the MULTIS gripper, which can accommodate a range of tools necessary for varied servicing tasks, and the LARIS Gripper, which is designed for the secure grasping of satellites. Complementing these are the Force and Torque Sensor, providing feedback to fine-tune the arm’s movements for tasks requiring high precision, and the Vision System, an advanced navigation aid for the robotic arm during the satellite docking process, ensuring exact alignment and secure coupling. These components are meticulously coordinated to carry out the critical operations needed to maintain and extend the spacecraft’s function within the space environment’s challenging confines.
MULTIS is designed for the careful handling of components, which is essential for regular maintenance and repair missions in harsh space environments. Its ability to attach and detach tools allows it to perform critical assembly tasks and routine inspections, ensuring that all structures remain safe and functional. Thanks to its versatility, MULTIS can find applications not only in orbit but also in planetary missions. Its tool-change capability makes it ideal for a variety of tasks, such as collecting regolith samples on the surface of other planets or moons. MULTIS could be used to gently manipulate geological samples, allowing scientists to gain valuable data on the composition and history of celestial bodies. In addition, its ability to precisely rotate and manipulate a variety of instruments could prove invaluable when assembling or repairing equipment on the surface of planets, where conditions can be unpredictable and require a flexible approach.
PIAP Space has been developing robotic solutions for the space industry since 2017. In 2022, in a joint NASA and ESA project, engineers from the company built a prototype chassis for the Sample Fetch Rover (SFR) for the Mars Sample Return mission. The SFR was designed to collect and transport Martian rock and soil samples to a return rocket that would bring them back to Earth. The company is also the prime contractor for ESA in the TITAN project, an advanced robotic arm dedicated to precise orbital operations, and recently announced that its robotic arm model prototype (breadboard) design is going under test to be implemented in the ESA ARGONAUT landers project (MANUS), where it will be responsible for the safe unloading of the lander’s payload onto the lunar surface. It will enable ESA to perform various tasks, such as crewed missions, cargo transport with unloading, and autonomous exploration of the Moon.
