As Europe pushes towards a greener future, the RESPONDENT project is set to showcase how cutting-edge AI and space-based technologies can revolutionize renewable energy forecasting, with its first pilot demonstration taking place this October in Athens.

Funded under the European Commission’s programme for research and innovation Horizon, Europe, the RESPONDENT project is dedicated to advancing the integration of renewable energy into Europe’s power grids through innovative AI and space-based technologies.

Launched in November 2022, the project has brought together experts from across Europe to develop solutions that will optimise energy production, enhance grid management, and contribute to the EU’s Green Deal goals. The project aims to reduce Europe’s reliance on fossil fuels, strengthen the resilience of its energy infrastructure, and lead the charge towards a safe, stable, and equitable energy future for Europe using cutting-edge research and technological innovation.

The RESPONDENT project is set to hold its first major pilot demonstration on October 15, 2024, in Athens, Greece. For the first time, the project will showcase its advanced AI/ML (machine learning) algorithm, designed to optimise energy production and efficiency by leveraging local weather forecasts. The algorithm, built using data from the EU’s Copernicus satellite climate and atmosphere monitoring service (CAMS), will be tested under real-world conditions to validate its capabilities.

By integrating historical and forecast weather data with the AI/ML models, the project aims to predict renewable energy output with an anticipated improvement of 8-12% over current industry standards. Data from the Copernicus programme, in combination with IoT weather stations developed by project partner Future Intellgience Ltd (FINT), will drive these gains.

“Our first pilot demonstration is a crucial moment for RESPONDENT, one that we have been looking forward to for a long time,” said Effie Makri, RESPONDENT project coordinator and VP of Research and Innovation at FINT. “It allows us to showcase the exciting technology that we’ve been working on and its potential to contribute to the EU’s desire to be a leader in clean energy production.”

Offering a firsthand look at RESPONDENT’s innovations and solutions aim to shape the future of renewable energy forecasting for Europe and the wider world, the project consortium is eager to invite industry leaders, stakeholders, media representatives, and all other interested parties to consider attending their upcoming pilot demonstration on October 15, either in person in Athens or via online streaming.

More details, including registration information, can be found at by visiting the RESPONDENT website.
