Energy poverty remains a pressing challenge in many parts of Europe, particularly in regions where vulnerable populations face harsh climate conditions and live in poorly insulated or energy-inefficient buildings. To address this issue, the REVERTER project—co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme—has developed an innovative suite of tools and solutions aimed at helping EU citizens, municipalities, and stakeholders combat energy poverty across the continent.
A holistic approach to Energy Poverty
The REVERTER project focuses on four diverse regions across four pilot countries. These areas were selected to reflect a range of climatic conditions, socio-economic contexts, and building types, ensuring that the solutions developed are both scalable and adaptable. Whether in urban apartments or rural homes, the tools created under REVERTER are designed to provide tangible, user-friendly support.
REVERTER Atlas: Mapping the challenge, guiding the solution
At the heart of the REVERTER project lies the REVERTER Atlas—an interactive online map and database offering in-depth insights into the pilot regions. The Atlas includes data on area demographics, building characteristics, local climate, and the current status of energy poverty, drawing from both primary and secondary sources.
In addition to providing a clear picture of each region’s energy landscape, the Atlas tracks the expected impacts of the project using key performance indicators (KPIs). These include:
- Primary and final energy savings
- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
- Number of buildings renovated
- Roadmaps for energy upgrades
- Number of energy-poor households reached
- Engagement activities such as home visits, events, and campaigns
REVERTERup! App: Your digital assistant for home energy upgrades
The REVERTERup! app is a user-friendly mobile tool that helps citizens assess and plan energy-saving improvements for their homes. The app guides users through four simple steps:
- General Data – Users enter basic information about their building.
- Current State – The app analyzes the existing condition of the home.
- Interventions – Users explore different energy-saving measures they might implement.
- Compare – The app presents various upgrade options and their estimated cost savings.
While the app offers region-specific reference data, users are encouraged to consult local professionals for tailored recommendations.
Physical and Digital One-Stop-Shops: Local support, personal guidance
To ensure maximum outreach and hands-on support, the REVERTER project established four digital One-Stop-Shops (OSS)—one in each pilot country. These platforms provide a centralized source of information on renovation processes, financial support schemes, energy-saving techniques, and awareness campaigns.
Each Digital OSS is available in the national language of the pilot region and is staffed with trained personnel who offer personalized advice and guidance to citizens. These support hubs aim to make the energy renovation journey more accessible, especially for those unfamiliar with the technical or financial aspects of home upgrades.
The REVERTER project represents a significant step forward in the fight against energy poverty in Europe. By combining digital innovation with on-the-ground support, it empowers both individuals and communities to take meaningful action.
