The Horizon Europe-funded project will showcase M-AI-R-DSS, an artificial intelligence-powered Decision Support System (DSS) designed to support more resilient groundwater management, at an online event on 27 October 2026.
Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, Spain) – 23 October 2026. Groundwater resources are increasingly under pressure from climate change, droughts, water scarcity and deteriorating water quality. In response to these challenges, the Horizon Europe-funded project MAR2PROTECT will present its main result, M-AI-R-DSS (Managed Aquifer Recharge for a Changing Climate), a new AI-powered platform designed to support climate-resilient groundwater management. The online event will take place on 27 October 2026, from 10:00 to 12:00 CET, with simultaneous translation available.
Developed by Cetaqua – Water Technology Centre using data and results generated by MAR2PROTECT partners, M-AI-R-DSS is a Decision Support System (DSS) that helps water managers, public authorities and other stakeholders make informed decisions when planning and operating Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) schemes. These systems involve the intentional introduction of water into aquifers to support groundwater resources and improve their resilience to climate and environmental pressures.
The platform integrates two complementary modules. MAR Planning DSS supports risk assessment and the evaluation of different MAR scenarios, helping users identify suitable strategies and locations. MAR Operational DSS supports the day-to-day management of MAR systems through real-time monitoring and operational decision support.
In addition to these tools, the platform provides access to resources, methodologies and results generated throughout the MAR2PROTECT project, bringing together relevant knowledge to facilitate the application of Managed Aquifer Recharge approaches.
Showcasing AI-powered solutions for groundwater resilience
The online event will introduce participants to the M-AI-R-DSS platform and demonstrate the main functionalities of its Planning and Operational modules. The session will also explore how artificial intelligence and digital technologies can support evidence-based decisions and more adaptive approaches to groundwater management under changing climatic and environmental conditions.
The event is aimed at professionals and organisations involved in water management, including civil society, public authorities, water utilities, environmental agencies, research institutions, consultancies and non-governmental organisations. Participants will have the opportunity to discover the platform’s capabilities and learn how digital decision-support tools can contribute to more sustainable groundwater management.
As a key outcome of MAR2PROTECT, M-AI-R-DSS seeks to make knowledge and digital tools more accessible to stakeholders involved in Managed Aquifer Recharge. By supporting the assessment, planning and operation of MAR schemes, the platform aims to contribute to reducing groundwater vulnerability and strengthening long-term water resilience.

About MAR2PROTECT
MAR2PROTECT, a Horizon Europe research project, is developing innovative monitoring, prevention, and risk management solutions to safeguard groundwater. The project brings together partners across seven demonstration sites in four European countries (Portugal, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands) and two additional sites in non-European countries (Tunisia and South Africa).
