Manganese is essential to steelmaking and increasingly important for batteries. Producing it is still carbon-intensive. For four years, the Horizon Europe project HAlMan has tested a different route: hydrogen pre-reduction of manganese ore followed by aluminothermic smelting with aluminium waste.
On 26 November 2026 at 14:00 CET, the consortium will present its results in a final public webinar on Webex: “Manganese production, reimagined: from HAlMan research to industrial reality.”
The programme moves from results to market:
- Project results and the road ahead: Dr. Maria Wallin and Prof. Jafar Safarian (NTNU, coordinators)
- Life cycle assessment of the HAlMan process: Athina Preveniou (Admiris)
- Techno-economic assessment of production in South Africa, Greece and Norway: Behrouz Kiani (Imperial College London)
- From results to a competitive first application, with hydrogen pre-reduction as the leading near-term pathway: Tom Hills (Leilac, part of the Calix group)
- Value to Customer and the most promising market applications: Dr. Paraskevi Efstathiou (Admiris)
The webinar is free and open to all. REGISTER NOW
