Co-organized with the Swiss technological research university and project partner ETH Zurich, this event brings together leading experts in brain interfacing technologies and nanotechnologies for precision interventions.

The European-funded META-BRAIN project, focused on achieving precise spatiotemporal control of brain activity using magnetoelectric and ultrasonic technology, is co-organizing the “Advanced Nanotechnologies for Precision Brain Interfacing” symposium in collaboration with ETH Zurich. This event, designed for senior scientists and students, is chaired by Prof. Salvador Pané from project partner ETH Zurich and Prof. Maria V. Sanchez-Vives from META-BRAIN’s coordinating institution, IDIBAPS. It will take place from Monday, March 31st to Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025, at ETH Zurich’s Monte Verità Conference Centre in Ascona, Switzerland.

The symposium program is structured to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in brain interfacing technologies, focusing on innovative nanotechnologies for precision interventions. Attendees can look forward to cutting-edge presentations spanning three days, covering breakthrough research and methodologies. Talks will delve into topics such as nanotechnologies to record and stimulate the brain or advanced applications, robotics and brain computer interfaces, with contributions from renowned experts, including many researchers from the META-BRAIN project. Confirmed speakers are (in alphabetical order):

  • Maria Asplund, from Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden)
  • Olgaç Ergeneman from Magnes AG (Switzerland)
  • Christoph Guger, from GTEC Medica Engineering (Austria)
  • Antón Guimerá-Brunet, from CSIC’s IMB-CNM (Spain)
  • Andreas Hierlemann, from ETH Zurich (Switzerland)
  • Abdelmadjid Hihi, from CEA-Leti (Switzerland)
  • Sakhrat Khizroev, from University of Miami (USA)
  • Kostas Kostarelos, from ICN2 (Spain) & The University of Manchester (UK)
  • Stéphanie P. Lacour, from EPFL (France)
  • Luca Maiolo, from CNR (Italy)
  • Bradley J. Nelson, from ETH Zurich (Switzerland)
  • Salvador Pané-Vidal, from ETH Zurich (Switzerland)
  • Marta Parazzini, from CNR (Italy)
  • Ana Pêgo, from University of Porto (Portugal)
  • Pieter Roelfsema, from University of Amsterdam (Netherlands)
  • Maria V. Sanchez-Vives, from IDIBAPS (Spain)
  • Doug Weber, from Carnegie Mellon University (USA)

This event is part of the Congressi Stefano Franscini, ETH Zürich’s platform for promoting, selecting, and funding international scientific conferences, workshops, and doctoral schools. It will take place at the Monte Verità Conference Centre near Ascona in the Swiss canton of Ticino. The venue offers various conference rooms, accommodation, and a restaurant with stunning views of Lake Maggiore and the surrounding Brissago Islands, making it an ideal setting for academic and professional gatherings. In addition to its natural beauty, Monte Verità holds historical significance as a former meeting place for artists, writers, and supporters of alternative movements in the early 20th century, providing yet another reason to attend the “Advanced Nanotechnologies for Precision Brain Interfacing” Symposium.

META-BRAIN is a project focused on developing strategies that can precisely regulate and restore neuronal activity using two innovative and minimally invasive technologies: magnetoelectric nanoarchitectures and ultrasound. These developments can be applied in the future to the treatment of neurological disorders. Supported by the European Union under the Horizon Europe program, with funding close to €3 million, META-BRAIN brings together expert partners in neuroscience, theoretical modelling, nanotechnology, novel materials, and clinical practice, from Spain (IDIBAPS, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, CIBER – Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red and Zabala Innovation), Italy (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche – CNR and its research institutes Istituto di Elettronica e di Ingegneria dell’Informazione e delle Telecomunicazioni and Istituto per la Microelettronica e Microsistemi), Austria (GTEC Medical Engineering) and Switzerland (ETH Zurich).
