  • ALIGNED and CALIMERO will organize a joint event in Brussels on the future of LCA for bio-based products and related policy and industry implications.
  • Experts will present key findings on improving the environmental performance of bio-based products at a hybrid event in Brussels, focusing on harmonized regulatory frameworks.

Aalborg, Denmark. May 20, 2025 – Industries attempting to achieve sustainability continue to face the challenge of examining the environmental impact and life cycle assessment (LCA) of bio-based products. To tackle this, the Horizon Europe sister projects ALIGNED and CALIMERO will jointly organize a Science-for-Policy event in Brussels to discuss major stakeholders’ progress regarding environmental assessment methods and overall policies for bio-based sectors.

The hybrid event, ‘Improved Assessment of Environmental Performance of Bio-Based Products,’ will be held from 09:00 to 13:00 CET at Thon EU Hotel. The workshop will target EU policy officers and industrial business leaders, enabling discussions of the latest policy developments and the best practices for the sustainability performance of bio-based products.

During the last three years, ALIGNED and CALIMERO have partnered with industry and sector associations in woodworking, pulp and paper, chemicals, textiles, and construction to develop and implement techniques that enhance the environmental performance of bio-based products. This event will showcase the most valuable considerations of the projects and what they mean for future research.

Below is the event agenda:

  • 09:00 – 09:10 | Opening remarks
Ms. Evdokia ACHILLEOS (European Research Executive Agency) – Head of Sector in the Biodiversity, Circular Economy and Environment Unit.
  • 09:10 – 09:40 | Introducing the ALIGNED-CALIMERO Sister HEU Projects
  • 09:40 – 10:10 | Research Highlights: Innovation in Assessing Bio-Based Products
  • 10:10 – 10:15 | Q&A Session
  • 10:15 – 10:35 | Project Impacts: Learnings from Stakeholders and Bringing Value Back to Them
  • 10:35 – 11:10 | Q&A Session and Break
  • 11:00 – 12:00 | Panel Discussion
Mauro Cordella, Policy Officer (DG Environment), Silvia Maltagliati, Policy Officer (DG Research & Innovation). Pelin Birsen, EREKS – Blue Matters, Industrial Partner (Textile Sector), Laura Monteiro, A4F, Industrial Partner (Algae Biorefinery)
  • 12:00 – 13:00 | Business Lunch

Horizon Europe grant agreements N° 101059430 and 101060546. Views and opinions expressed are however, those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Research Executive Agency. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.

The event aims to discuss between scientists, policymakers, and industry representatives to ultimately translate scientific progress into regulatory pathways to transition to a more sustainable bio-based economy. Results from projects will be shared, with a focus on actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders outside of the scientific community, specifically highlighting the need for standardized assessments and clearer regulatory pathways.

Registration for in-person attendance is now closed. If you wish to attend on-site, please contact info@alignedproject.eu

About ALIGNED

ALIGNED consortium consists of a unique combination of world-class researchers within LCA and system modelling, consultancies and technology experts working closely with bio-based industries, national and EU policymakers, as well as experts in communication. Crucially, ALIGNED includes bio-based industry representatives who are committed to co-develop and test the assessment framework, using it for actual sustainable product-development.

Informed by their detailed knowledge of existing guidelines, modelling tools and scientific methods for sustainability assessment in a life cycle perspective, consortium partners will delineate a common modelling framework, intended as a set of best practices for LCA studies in the construction, woodworking, textile, pulp and paper, and bio-chemicals sectors.

About CALIMERO

CALIMERO is a European project aimed at creating a common framework for Life Cycle Assessment methodologies tailored to specific sectors of bio-based industries. By assessing their processes, the project seeks to identify the main sources of pollutants, optimize resource use, and evaluate potential solutions to decrease environmental impacts. Additionally, CALIMERO addresses broader sustainability aspects, such as improving social and economic performance, to support the transition towards more sustainable and responsible practices in these sectors.

The CALIMERO Consortium, composed of 12 partners from seven countries, brings together expertise from across research, industry, and policy sectors. Coordinated by Contactica, the project covers five critical sectors: construction, woodworking, textiles, pulp and paper, and biochemicals. With a total budget of €3,518,900, the project is set to conclude in 2025, leaving behind a legacy of improved sustainability practices and tools for bio-based industries across Europe.
