Three Horizon Europe projects join forces to accelerate the development of safer, lighter, and more sustainable battery technologies for Europe

The new collaboration brings together ANGeLiC, HighMag and TALISSMAN to strengthen collaboration, visibility, and knowledge exchange around magnesium and lithium-sulphur battery innovation

Madrid, June 30, 2026 – Three European research and innovation projects have joined forces to maximise impacts and visibility in the framework of advancing next-generation battery solutions based on abundant, low-impact materials.

ANGeLiC, HighMag, and, TALISSMAN, three EU-funded projects working at the forefront of alternative battery chemistries, address some of the most pressing challenges facing the European battery sector: improving energy density, enhancing safety, reducing dependence on critical raw materials, and supporting the transition towards more sustainable mobility and energy storage systems.

The collaboration has been established to foster synergies between complementary research pathways in magnesium batteries and lithium-sulphur batteries. While HighMag is developing advanced rechargeable magnesium battery technologies, including magnesium-sulphur chemistries and protected magnesium anodes, ANGELiC and TALISSMAN are focused on the next generation of lithium-sulphur batteries, targeting safer, lighter and more sustainable solutions for mobility applications.

The connection of these projects helps to boost, promote, and produce knowledge exchange, joint communication activities, stakeholder engagement and wider visibility of Europe’s efforts to develop high-performance batteries beyond conventional lithium-ion systems. An example of this collaboration was translated into a virtual joint workshop celebrated on April 30, 2026, covering a wide variety of topics from the chemistry of non-fluorine salts and sulphur contamination to the long-term challenge of finding the right EU stakeholders to take these technologies to market.

Through collaboration, the cluster aims to contribute to Europe’s clean mobility objectives, the European Green Deal, and the development of a more competitive and sustainable battery industry. The three projects will continue to work independently while using SulfurMag Europe as a common platform for cooperation, communication and outreach.

ABOUT MAGNESIUM AND SULPHUR

Magnesium and sulphur can play a crucial role in Europe’s battery future. Both are abundant, more widely available and less geopolitically constrained than many critical raw materials used in conventional batteries. By enabling safer, lighter and potentially lower-cost energy storage systems, magnesium and sulphur-based technologies can help reduce Europe’s dependency on external supply chains, strengthen industrial resilience and support the continent’s transition towards clean mobility and sustainable energy independence.

ABOUT ANGeLiC

The ANGeLiC is a Horizon Europe project developing breakthrough Generation 5 Lithium-Sulphur (Li-S) batteries specifically designed for heavy-duty vehicles and mobility applications. Its mission consists of creating safer, more sustainable, and cost-effective alternatives to current Li-ion technology. The 13-partner consortium brings together leading research institutions and industry experts to solve critical challenges in electric mobility. The goal is to contribute to a sustainable, circular, and competitive European battery value chain by advancing post-Li-ion technology that enhances energy density, safety, and recyclability while minimizing environmental impact.

ABOUT HighMag

HighMag is a parallel Generation 5 battery project exploring alternative chemistry to lithium-based systems, focusing on rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) for mobility applications. The project develops two innovative battery systems: a magnesium-sulfur battery with a conversion cathode and a magnesium metal battery with an insertion cathode. Both systems comprise a protected powder-based magnesium anode addressing the need for sustainable, low-cost energy storage solutions that reduce reliance on critical raw materials. HighMag complements ANGeLiC’s work by diversifying Europe’s post-lithium-ion battery technology portfolio.
