14 April 2025 – The European research project BIOPYRANIA has launched its new campaign #BioBasedForAll, an initiative aimed at making cutting-edge sustainable innovation more accessible to a wider audience. The campaign is designed to communicate the project’s key developments in a clear and engaging way, helping non-experts understand the value and impact of new biobased materials.
BIOPYRANIA is developing a new class of biobased polymers using pyrazine monomers, chemical compounds synthesised through environmentally friendly processes. These monomers are derived from second-generation woody biomass, sourced in Europe and converted using fermentation technologies. This innovative approach avoids the use of fossil resources and toxic solvents, contributing to a more circular and sustainable European industry.
The pyrazine-based polymers developed within the project – specifically polyamides (PA) and polybenzimidazoles (PBI) – offer high-performance properties such as thermal stability, mechanical strength, and functional versatility. These characteristics make them promising candidates for demanding applications in electric vehicles, such as battery enclosures and electronic components, as well as in green hydrogen technologies, including electrolyser membranes and fuel cells.
The #BioBasedForAll campaign will focus on explaining the scientific concepts behind the project in simplified terms, using a range of accessible formats including infographics, short videos, animations, and social media content. The campaign highlights how sustainable materials, even when highly technical, have tangible benefits that can contribute to a more climate-friendly future.
By engaging a broader public, the campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable product design, in line with the European Sustainable Products Initiative. It also supports the EU’s broader strategies for climate neutrality and industrial transformation, such as the Bioeconomy Action Plan and the Green Deal.
BIOPYRANIA brings together a consortium of 13 European partners, including research institutions, technology developers, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and industrial end-users. The project is coordinated by ENCO and supported by Horizon Europe funding. It combines scientific excellence with digital tools, safety and sustainability assessments, and market analysis to accelerate the development and uptake of new biobased products.
