The SALTO project is inviting professionals, experts, students and space enthusiasts to an exciting new webinar — “Landing the Future: Avionics, Safety & Thermal Protection in SALTO.” The event will take place on 28 October 2025 from 16:00 to 17:00 CET via Webex and will offer a rare opportunity to step behind the scenes of one of Europe’s most ambitious space initiatives.
Funded by the European Union, SALTO (Reusable Launcher Technologies) is advancing the next generation of reusable launch systems in Europe. With a strong consortium of 25 partners from 12 countries, the project brings together top researchers, engineers, and innovators from across the continent. Each partner plays a distinct role, contributing specialised expertise toward a shared goal — building a smarter, safer, and more sustainable future for spaceflight.
Behind the scenes: SALTO in action
This second SALTO webinar will spotlight three of the project’s key partners — Réaltra (Ireland), Amorim Cork Solutions (Portugal), and GTD (Spain) — who will present their latest breakthroughs in avionics, safety systems, and bio-sourced thermal protection technologies.
- Eduard Diez (GTD) will discuss the development of the Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS) — a critical innovation enabling launch vehicles to make real-time, onboard safety decisions during flight, supporting Europe’s path toward launcher reusability and cost efficiency.
- Nadia Silva (Amorim Cork Solutions) will present work on a new bio-sourced Thermal Protection System (Bio-TPS), highlighting sustainable materials and design for removable thermal back shields.
- Michael Martin (Réaltra) will showcase cutting-edge space avionics, including the Réaltra video camera and Ethernet Network Switch developed for SALTO missions, with heritage on the Ariane 5 and 6 launches.
The SALTO consortium represents a powerful collaboration of academia, research institutions, and private industry — working together to strengthen Europe’s technological independence in space. Through initiatives like this webinar, the project opens its doors to a broader audience, inviting knowledge exchange and engagement with the next generation of space professionals.
