The SISTERS project, funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, is transforming every stage of the food value chain with the aim of reducing food loss and waste.
With a budget of €10.1 million, of which €8.3 million is provided by the European Commission, this consortium, composed of 18 partners from 8 European countries and coordinated by AITIIP Technology Centre, is implementing innovative strategies that directly benefit primary producers.
Key Objectives of the SISTERS Project:
- Direct Sales and Short Supply Chain: Providing effective tools for primary producers to promote direct sales, thus reducing losses during production.
- Reduction of Losses in Transport: Integrating tracking systems into innovative containers to minimise food losses during transport.
- Eco-friendly Packaging Materials: Developing high-performance biodegradable, recyclable, and compostable packaging materials.
- New Packaging Materials: Innovating in sustainable and environmentally friendly food packaging materials.
- Social, Economic, and Environmental Benefits: Generating co-benefits across various areas to improve sustainability throughout the chain.
- Awareness Among Retailers and Consumers: Raising awareness to reduce food waste in consumption.
- European Synergies and Coordination: Establishing cross-sectoral synergies to ensure the European Union’s leadership in sustainable packaging.
Regioneo: Digital Short Supply Chain Solution to Strengthen the Local Economy
Regioneo, the first European digital short supply chain solution, enables producers to sell their discarded produce directly to consumers. This solution not only strengthens local economies but also provides access to nutritious and healthy food. Available in seven European languages, with plans to expand to all official EU languages, Regioneo represents a significant opportunity for producers.
Key Benefits for Primary Producers:
- Optimised Order Management: Saves time by anticipating orders, allowing for more efficient production planning and distribution.
- Enhanced Online Presence: Develop a website that highlights your unique identity and production methods, giving customers a deeper understanding of your brand.
- Stronger Customer Connections: Build new relationships with your customers, fostering closer ties and better interaction through personalised experiences.
Since its launch in March 2023, 9 producers are already testing the solution, and this number is expected to grow as more producers join. Regioneo will continue to evolve with new features based on user feedback, simplifying website design, adding new functionalities, and facilitating billing systems.
Regioneo offers primary producers a unique opportunity to innovate and thrive in the agricultural market, maximising their revenue and contributing to a more sustainable food system. SISTERS has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101037796.
